The One About Quality Over Quantity One of my goals for 2024 was to really get connected to people I admire. In the podcasting space, the content space, wherever. The 'where' didn’t matter. It’s the quality rather than quantity that I’m after! I’m looking for genuine connections. And I’m looking for community. And aren’t we all, really, in some way, shape, or form? But I realized that if I really want to forge these genuine connections, I had to come up with a game plan. Something that’s different from the norm. Because genuine connections don’t just happen. They have to be forged! They require something outside the ordinary. But they are worth it! So if you’re also hungry for those genuine connections, I thought I’d share my game plan with you… But first, 🚨a word of warning🚨: These are a little scary! If I’m being honest, they’ve required a good dose of bravery each time I’ve put them into action. But in all my recent experiences, the result has been unbelievably worth it! So, here they are. My game plan for forging genuine connections… Make the first move 🕺 I honestly have no idea where the notion of “don’t make the first move” or “play it cool” came from? Maybe I don’t get it because I’m not cool? (I’m not being self-deprecating here. I know I’m many great things, cool is just NOT one of them…and I’m totally cool with that! 😉)
(No, Joel. I don't think I can. 🤣) I know it can be scary to make that first move. To send that LinkedIn message, to reach out via email, or (gulp) to make that initial call. But all connections require a first step. So stack the odds in your favor by making the first move. Sure, some may not all develop into the friendships or connections you were hoping for. But you will have way more opportunities to create those genuine connections than if you just keep waiting for someone else to make the first move. Now to the next move in the game plan 😉… Just tell ‘em 🗣️ Want to let someone know you admire their work? That you love what they do? That you’d love to chat more to them about their latest project? Then just tell ‘em! I recently had the opportunity to do this at the This Is How We Podcast event. (You can find my full recap on that event below.) I got to tell podcasters I really admire how much I love their show. I got to tell them to their faces. Yes, I was a little hesitant at first. No, I did not play it cool But at least now they know, even if it was for just that moment, that the work they do is appreciated. And who doesn’t want to hear that, right?! And more often than not, simply telling someone that you genuinely appreciate the work that they do has been the thing that opened the door to some truly epic connections. But like I said I did not play it cool – and that’s OKAY! Cool is overrated anyway! Which brings me to... Don’t be afraid to ‘fangirl’ 📣 ‘Fangirling’ has typically got a negative connotation – that of making a fool of yourself in front of some big-shot celebrity. And thinking about it in that light, I get it. But I kinda want to reclaim the word. And put a positive spin on it. Rather than “fangirling” being a whole lot of screaming, torrents of tears, and incoherent sentences, what if it was just simply being brave enough to let someone know you’re a fan of what they’re doing? What if “fangirling” was just being bold enough to let someone they’ve had an impact on you? That their work – be it their podcast, their book, their music – means something – means A LOT – to you. And really, why shouldn’t we tell people why we love what they do? Think about your own projects or the things you’re working on. You’re putting all this hard work and heart into what you’re doing. And doesn’t it feel amazing when it’s recognized and appreciated and “seen”? And don’t you immediately feel a bond with whoever is sharing this with you? That’s the ✨magic✨ of genuine connection! And none of that would have happened if someone wasn’t brave enough to “fangirl”! So today’s call-to-action 📣 is as much to myself as it is to anyone else. It’s a reminder that genuine connections often require an act of bravery – but the payout is most definitely worth it! Founder's Corner As a mom, founder, and podcaster, I'm constantly having to schedule and juggle my time (my oh so precious time 🙏🏼) in a day. Between all the things that require my time and attention, sometimes I feel like my days are chopped up into tiny little slivers. And this got me thinking... Are those slivers of time even meaningful when they are so "chopped up"? ✂️ We get so used to simply being "busy" in a day that we don't often take the time to analyze what we are busy with or if it is actually quality-focused. Now, this is not to say that being successful does not require hard work. Because, of course it does! Sometimes, the season that you are in requires a lot of hours, non-stop hustle, and doing more than the average person would. For example, when you are deep in the trenches of launching a podcast or a new course or simply starting anything new, then it's definitely about the quantity. But once you've put in that initial time investment, then it's time to put the systems into place to help you make a mindset shift! ► Quality Over Quantity. So what does this look like? The interesting thing about this mindset shift or "debate" is that it touches on all areas of what you do. Let's take your podcast, for example. ► Guest interviews Seeing the trend? Knowing how busy life can get and how precious time really is, personally I think there's something to be said for focusing on quality time blocks rather than "busyness". "It's not about how long you work; it's about how well you work." So, what are some things that shift when you focus on quality? Enhanced Productivity 💪: When we prioritize quality, we focus on what truly matters. This leads to more efficient use of time and ultimately, better outcomes. Increased Creativity 🎨: A quality-over-quantity approach gives you the mental space to think creatively and to innovate. This can lead to better problem-solving and again, more focused results! Improved Well-being 🧘♀️: When you focus on quality in your work, this mindset carries through into your personal life as well, reducing stress and burnout, and promoting overall well-being. A More Engaged Mindset 🧠: When you see the value that the quality-over-quantity approach brings, in turn you become more committed to what you do. Which helps promote consistency and follow-through in the long run. So, what stage of your podcast are you in? The quantity hustle or the quality marathon? Perhaps neither? 🤷♀️ Or perhaps you simply need to find a good middle ground. Whatever season you are in, just try to find a way to make the time you put in matter! Until next week!
