The One About Taking Action Carli and I were doing some “serious business brainstorming” the other day. And at some point in the “very serious brainstorming”, we rabbit-holed (as you do) down a path that led to, at the time, a very natural follow-up question, “So, what’s your go-to karaoke song?” FUN FACT: Carli’s is “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood. (Classic!)
Mine is Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby”. 🧊 Less classic. I know. But, for whatever reason, many moons ago, I had this brainwave (I use that term very loosely!) to learn all the words to that song. And I have retained them ever since. Other arguably more important information has been lost for good, but every single word of "Ice, Ice Baby" has remained. The brain is a strange place. But why am I telling you this? It will all make sense in a bit. (I think? Bear with me!) Now, part of that “very serious brainstorming” was a discussion on Case Studies. We love a good case study here at We Edit Podcasts. They offer so much practical insights and real-world examples for how to do whatever it is that you want to do! We see so much value in case studies that we’ve recently started compiling and sharing our own on The Podcast Digest. (You can check out our latest one a little further down!) So, I have case studies on the brain. While another part of my brain is also going, “Alright, stop! Collaborate and listen!” 🎤 And ALL of this is taking place while I'm brainstorming my piece for the newsletter. Again, the brain is a strange place. 🧠 I knew I wanted to share about how to apply strategies – be it those we discover in those amazing case studies, or through self-help books, or those lightbulb moments dished up by our favorite podcasts – to bring about real change in our lives. Because a case study is really only effective if it brings about effective change in our lives, right? And then actual brainwave – the phrase “Stop, Evaluate, and Listen!” pops into my head. And then I realized that this is the formula for taking those amazing concepts or strategies we've discovered, and then applying them to our lives. Lemme break it down… Stop! 🛑 First up. You have to take a little time out to figure out what it is you want to learn, the areas in your life where you want to level up, or even perhaps the habits you want to change. You gotta stop! Then it's time to... Evaluate 🔍 Now it’s time to gather information. You read those books, you dive into those case studies, or you binge-listen episodes from your favorite podcasts. But, here’s the key. You can’t just absorb and apply every strategy or tactic you hear. And not every strategy is going to work for you. So you have to evaluate. You have to figure out what will work for YOU. Because only then can you take the steps to bring about the desired outcome. Which brings us to… Listen 👂 So you’ve taken the time to figure out where you want to level up (stop) 🛑 you’ve figured out the strategies that will work for YOU (evaluate) 🔍 now it’s time to listen! 👂AKA actually apply the strategies to your life! And because you’ve taken the necessary steps to figure out the strategies that will work for you, and you’ve put a strategy in place to put those strategies into action, that action is going to lead to success! - Jennay (Word to your mother.🎤) Love a case study as much as we do? Check out our latest one here!👇 🤩 Behind the Scenes...and Beyond the Mic The latest episode of Business Beyond the Mic is another solo episode from Carli and it’s ANOTHER winner! 🤩 In this episode, Carli tackles a big topic…how to get your podcast back on track when you’ve hit some bumps in the road. Setbacks, hurdles, and curveballs are inevitable. They can slow you down, but they don’t have to bring you to a complete stop! Carli shares three strategies that you can use to help you regain your podcast momentum, and put your show back on track. Hit this link to watch the interview! Founder's Corner I saw this phrase the other day... "If the thing the person wants me to do was happening tomorrow, would I want to do it?" Turns out, I read it like this... "If the thing the person wants me to do was happening tomorrow,
how would I get it done?"
But either way you spin it...those two questions are powerful! WOULD you want to do it, and, if so, HOW would you get it done? Here on the Founder's Corner I talk a lot about using your time wisely. As a CEO and busy mom of 2, time is ever so precious! And if I'm not in control of my own calendar, someone else definitely will be. For me, to keep things organized, there are only two categories of to-do's that I allow into my work schedule. 1: Urgent + Important ☝️ If it's urgent it means there is a deadline. It is also important because it will drive my business or podcast (or goals) forward! However, there is also the second category of non-urgent, yet still important. In fact, some non-urgent to-do's might be the most impactful for your podcast in the long run! Now, if you only have 24 hours, how do you do it all? The key is to save time in some areas so that you can spend more in areas that matter most! This applies to so many areas of your life. I mean, how often have you heard a great idea or new suggestion and thought, "Oh, I simply don't have time for that." Like when someone suggests you launch more frequent episodes, or add video to your podcast, or create engaging social clips, or even spend more time on better podcast promotion...the list goes on! All these extras take time...HOWEVER, they can have an immense impact! Conclusion? You need to find the time! So, the next time you hear yourself say, “Oh I don’t have time for that”, do you know what that’s code for? I need to do a TIME AUDIT! 🕵️♂️ By doing a quick audit of what you spend your time on, you can easily identify tasks that can either be outsourced or simply eliminated all together, so that you have the time for what is going to make the biggest impact. So here’s how I do a simple time audit in 3 steps. 1. Document ✍️ First up, you need a timing system. Whether it’s good ol’ pen and paper or a fancy time-tracking app, find what works for you. Then, diligently log your activities throughout the day. Don’t worry, we won’t judge if you spend a bit too long scrolling through cat videos. 🐱 2. Categorize 📊 Next, organize those activities into categories. Work-related stuff goes in one pile, leisure activities in another, family time in another, and so on. It’s like Marie Kondo-ing your time – if it doesn’t spark joy (or productivity), it might need to go. 3. Analyze 🤓 Time to crunch some numbers! Add up the hours spent in each category and then ask yourself:
Next, take a long, hard look at your data. Notice any trends? Are you spending way too much time on tasks that could easily be delegated? Are you flip-flopping between tasks too often without actually completing any? Or maybe you’re indulging in too many binge marathons of your favorite comfort show when you could be recording an extra episode. Whatever it is, identify the time-sucks and brainstorm ways to reclaim those minutes (or hours)! So there you have it – a simple yet powerful way to take control of your time. And ✨REMEMBER✨, control your own time, or someone else will dictate it for you! Until next week! Happy podcasting! 🎧 The Team at We Edit Podcasts Is it your first time here? Then, welcome!
