How To Level-Up Your Podcast Through the Power of Storytelling A couple of weeks ago, Carli and I attended the "This Is How We Podcast" event. We had a lot of fun! 🤩 The focus of this particular event was storytelling. And something you may or may not know about me is that I'm a BIG fan of storytelling. And that's because I just love words! I'd even venture so far as to call myself a "word nerd" 🤓. But it goes deeper than that. I believe that the ability to use words well and tell a great story is kinda like a superpower. 💥
(Okay, maybe not the greatest joy. But it is up there.) (Although who am I to argue with Meryl?!) But everyone has their “pet” subject. This is one of mine. (Another is about what a trainwreck Oceans 8 was 🫢…but that’s a discussion for another time and place.) But in all honesty, there is very little I love more than a good story, told well. And it’s because a well-told story is like ✨magic✨! Put words in a particular order, pick the right words, and you could change the world. (Font matters, too! 👇🤣 But again, a discussion for another time and place.) (I told you, word nerd! 🤓) And when it comes to your podcast, storytelling is one of the most powerful tools in your podcasting arsenal. No matter what kind of podcast you have, you can take all elements of your podcast to the next level through the power of great storytelling. Let me tell you how 😉: 📚Stories Foster Connection Stories are designed to connect the “teller” with their audience. When you can engage your listeners with you and your content through great storytelling skills, you strengthen their connection to your show. 📚Great Storytelling Gets the Emotions Involved Great stories make us feel something. They evoke emotions. And when our emotions get involved – when we become emotionally invested in something – our engagement naturally increases. It doesn’t matter what format or type of podcast you have, if you can craft your content to connect with your listeners’ emotions, your listeners’ engagement with your content and your show overall will increase. 📚Great Stories Spread When we really connect with a piece of content – whether it’s because it made us laugh, cry, or just brought clarity and understanding – we are compelled to share it. We’ve been sharing stories since the beginning of time. And we’re never going to stop! If you can hone your storytelling superpower, and apply it to your podcast content, it will be your stories that people are sharing. I really could wax lyrical about how powerful storytelling skills truly are. But long story short 😉, if you can see the value in storytelling, and how these skills can not only elevate your content, but also help you connect with your listeners, and grow your audience, you’ll no doubt believe in the magic of storytelling, and embrace it for the podcasting superpower it truly is. End of story. - Jennay If you want to see some of the fun Carli and I got up to at the "This Is How We Podcast" event, you can check it all out here!👇 🤩 Behind the Scenes...and Beyond the Mic Carli is back with another solo episode this week on Business Beyond the Mic! Founder's Corner I love digging into easy ways to level up your podcast. And one of those ways is to elevate your content through storytelling. This week I heard an interesting phrase: "Learn how to communicate in soundbites." Think about some of the best podcasters, speakers, or teachers that you know. The reason they are so effective is because they communicate their message in a clear, succinct way. When these experts speak, they simply have a way of giving their audience unique "soundbites" which make for incredible takeaways. The best part is that people remember their message, and they SHARE it! Wouldn't it be great if it was YOUR message they're sharing? And these experts make it seem effortless! 😅 The bad news? It's definitely NOT without effort. Speaking succinctly takes a lot of practice! The good news? It is a learned skill! So, ultimately we can all develop this ability! 🔥 Now, why is this important? So often we have brilliant ideas and advice to share with others, but because we don't practice often enough how to say it effortlessly, our message gets lost. Or we end all our sentences with, "Does that make sense?" I say it's time to take a step back and make sure you are prepared to MAKE IT MAKE SENSE! Jack of all trades, master of none? ❌ Nonsense! ❌ The way you phrase an idea can be the key to how people respond to it. Although they may have heard the same advice before, the way you package the message is what finally gives them the "epiphany" they need to make a change. Mastering those soundbites can be the difference between someone sharing your message or simply letting it slide by. Ready to make your own soundbites? Here are three easy steps toward polishing your message: 1. Remove the fluff. Start by recording yourself. Listen carefully. What phrases or words stand out as unnecessary? Cut them out. Then, edit and rewrite your script. The goal is to deliver your message clearly and concisely, without any extra baggage. 2. Keep it simplified. Simplicity is key. 🔑 Break down your message into its most basic components. Trim the excess. Aim for straightforward and easily digestible content. 3. Make it memorable. Think about how you can make your words resonate. Use storytelling techniques, vivid imagery, or a clever turn of phrase. The more distinctive and engaging your message, the more likely it is to leave a lasting impression on your listeners. Remember! Trust the process. In order to become one of those people who make this look easy, you have to be willing to work hard at it. Put in the time, practice your soundbites, and it is sure to pay off in the long-run!
